About JEN (Japan Emergency NGO)

JEN was established in January 1994 to provide emergency assistance in the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Since then, adhering to the concept of “psycho-social and self-reliance support,” JEN has been consistently in charge of offering support activities to those people who have been stricken with hardship due to conflicts and disasters across the globe, in every phase of recovery from emergency assistance to reconstruction.

JEN became a non-profit organization in 2000, opening its headquarters in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Authorized by the National Tax Agency on September 1,2005, JEN offers assistance activities in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Tohoku, Kumamoto and Jordan (for Syrian Refugees), as of October 2016.

Mission and vision

Our mission

We put our utmost efforts into restoring a self-supporting livelihood both economically and mentally to those people who have been stricken with hardship due to conflicts and disasters. We do so promptly, precisely, and flexibly by fully utilizing local human and material resources, considering this the most promising way to revitalize the society.

Furthermore, we also try to convey victims’ sufferings and their efforts to overcome such sufferings along with their hopes and desires to the rest of the world so that the value of peace is seen in a new light and is shared by people everywhere.

 

Our vision

Adhering to our belief that "every human being has a precious life of equal value", we hope to realize a world in which we respect and understand each other, mutually support one another, and live with self-confidence.

Project management policy

Recognizing the needs in the fields,

Meeting the needs in an appropriate manner is very crucial when assistance programs are implemented. Thus, programs must be designed carefully based on prudent assessments and be flexibly revised according to the altering situations.

Working together with the local people,

The local people play the main role in JEN's assistance program. Local staff lead program implementation with guidance from local professionals under the management of experienced international staff.

Focusing on forgotten peoples and regions,

Not all areas in need receive media attention. JEN implements its assistance programs even in regions where there has been little or no media coverage, especially for vulnerable populations.

Building and maintaining self-reliance,

JEN promotes self-reliance of those people in need. In that light, JEN's programs take a long view and employ mechanisms that maximize the use of people's ability and the will of humans to live. The experience and expertise of JEN make this possible.

We achieve the best at minimum cost.

For successful program implementation at minimum cost, we obtain all possible resources locally, both human and material. In this way the potential capabilities of an area can be developed effectively and economically.
