2.Issues and Needs
From May 2nd – 3rd 2008, Myanmar was hit by Cyclone Nargis, which resulted in 132,000 deaths and missing persons, an estimated 20,000 injured persons (as presented by the Government of Myanmar on May 16th), and over 250,000,000 affected persons.
The region of Yangon located in the south and the region of Ayeyawady holds a population of over 13,000,000 and has been severely affected by the cyclone. According to the Government of Myanmar, over 95% of houses have been destroyed in the worst affected regions. The rainy season is due to start soon after the disaster; resulting in fear of a secondary disaster that will affect the agriculture and lifestyle of the people. Under such circumstances emergency assistance is needed and JEN has dispatched a staff member to conduct an initial assessment.
